Compare iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max sizes, battery ratings and shared cameras, plus release timing and the charger needed for faster wired charging.
Choose iPhone 18 Pro if a smaller phone matters most; consider Pro Max if you want more screen space and the higher battery rating. Apple gives both models the A20 Pro chip and the new variable-aperture Main camera, so the larger phone is not required for those upgrades. Apple’s model overview describes the shared features.

Release date and ordering
Apple opened pre-orders on September 12, with initial availability beginning September 18, 2026. Delivery depends on your region, configuration and order. Check the total for your chosen storage and purchase option in Apple’s launch announcement and the linked store.
Size is the first decision
Physical differences from Apple’s U.S. technical specifications| Specification | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max |

| Width | 71.9 mm | 78.0 mm |

The Max is 38 grams heavier before adding a case. That difference deserves attention if you read in bed, use your phone one-handed or carry it in a small pocket. Try both sizes in person if possible. More display area is useful only if the phone remains comfortable for your routine.
What the battery numbers mean
Apple rates the eSIM-only Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback and the eSIM-only Pro Max for up to 45 hours. The company says models with a physical SIM tray have two fewer hours of rated video playback. These are Apple’s stated ratings and regional hardware differences, not a promise of that many hours using maps, games or the camera.
The Max is the more compelling choice if battery headroom is your priority. If you usually finish the day comfortably, the smaller model may be the better everyday trade-off. Compare the specification page for the country where you are buying, especially when considering an import.
The camera upgrade is shared
Both phones offer a Main camera whose aperture can change, plus manual Pro controls. Apple describes wider settings for gathering light and narrower settings for greater depth of field. Those are the advertised creative benefits; they do not establish how consistently either phone performs in independent photography tests.
If your current camera already meets your needs, wait for representative full-resolution samples before upgrading solely for image quality. A new control is most valuable when it solves a problem you actually encounter.
Check your charger before buying another
Apple’s fastest wired figure—up to 50% in around 15 minutes—requires a 60W-capable or higher adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply, plus a USB-C charging cable. The charging specification is more specific than wattage alone. Do not assume an existing 60W charger meets it.
Start by checking the adapter’s supported charging modes. Our MagSafe, Qi and Qi2 explainer covers the separate wireless standards. Choose a case explicitly listed for your exact new model rather than relying on a similar screen size.
