AirPods 4 vs AirPods Pro 3 in 2026: seal, ANC, battery, health features and case compared, plus who should skip AirPods 4 with ANC and camera AirPods.
Quick answer: buy AirPods Pro 3 unless you will not wear silicone tips. That is the pair with the seal, the stronger noise cancellation, the longer runtime with ANC on, and the health suite. If you want an open-ear set and will not miss noise cancellation, buy AirPods 4. Skip AirPods 4 with ANC as the usual compromise, and do not wait for camera AirPods.
Source check: August 21, 2026. Specs and feature splits come from Apple's AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 tech-spec pages, plus 9to5Mac's August 20, 2026 comparison and its August 21 recap of Bloomberg and Mark Gurman reporting on camera AirPods. Case sizes and charging notes match our accessories guide. Nothing unreleased is treated as a 2026 product.

The Three AirPods Models, Plainly
Apple currently sells three AirPods bud models, not two. They share the H2 chip and the usual one-tap iPhone pairing, then split on fit, noise control, battery with ANC on, health features, and the case. Almost every buying mistake in this category starts with treating the middle model as a cheap Pro.
AirPods 4
AirPods 4 use an open-ear shape with no silicone tips. There is no ANC and no Transparency, because there is no seal to control. The standard case is USB-C only: no wireless charging coil and no Find My speaker, so a MagSafe puck or a Qi pad next to your bed does nothing for it. The shell measures 50.1 x 46.2 x 21.2 mm and is rated IP54. This is the open-ear pair, and the cheapest way onto the H2 chip.

AirPods 4 with ANC
AirPods 4 with ANC keep that same open fit and the same 50.1 x 46.2 x 21.2 mm IP54 case size. They add Adaptive Audio, Transparency, and a wireless-charging case with a Find My speaker. Apple rates them at up to four hours of listening with ANC on. Because the ear canal is not sealed, more outside sound still gets through, which is why this ANC is weaker on flights and transit than a sealed Pro.

AirPods Pro 3
AirPods Pro 3 (2025, Apple H2) use foam-infused silicone tips. The seal is the point: stronger ANC, stronger bass, and the health features that need a consistent seat in the ear. Apple rates them at up to eight hours with ANC on, double the ANC 4. They can read workout heart rate and support Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection. The MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C) has a Find My speaker and a lanyard loop, and both buds and case are IP57. The case measures 62.2 x 47.2 x 21.8 mm. Wireless charging is there at 5W Qi, not Qi2, so a Qi2 stand will not charge the case any faster.
That case size matters if you already own Pro 2 gear. The AirPods Pro 2 MagSafe case is roughly 2 mm smaller in every dimension, so covers cut for it will not close on a Pro 3 case, and the Pro 3 nozzle changed enough that older Pro tips do not seat properly either.

If you want over-ear cups instead of in-ear buds, that is a different product: see our AirPods Max 2 review. This comparison stays with the three current bud models.
The Differences That Actually Change the Buy
Skip the spec-sheet dump. Five things decide the purchase.
Fit. AirPods 4 sit in the ear without tips. AirPods Pro 3 seal with foam-infused silicone. If you refuse tips, you are on the AirPods 4 line, and you do not get a Pro seal by paying up for the ANC model. If you will wear tips, Pro 3 is the fit that makes ANC, bass and the hearing features work as advertised. Fit is also the cheapest thing to get wrong: the wrong tip size costs you noise cancellation and bass before any of the electronics get a chance.
Noise cancellation. Pro 3 ANC is the strong one precisely because of the seal. AirPods 4 have none at all. AirPods 4 with ANC add noise control on an open design, so cabin roar and train rumble still leak in. Adaptive Audio and Transparency on the ANC 4 are real, useful features. They are not a substitute for a sealed Pro on a five-hour flight.
Battery with ANC on. Pro 3: up to eight hours. AirPods 4 with ANC: up to four. That gap is invisible on a commute and very visible on a long-haul flight or a full work day, where the difference is one charge or two.
Health features. Workout heart rate, Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection are Pro 3 only. We unpacked how those work, and where they stop, in AirPods Pro health features. Neither AirPods 4 model gets that suite, and no software update will add it, because the sensors are not in the hardware. If hearing tools or a gym heart-rate read are part of why you are shopping, you are shopping for Pro 3.
The case. Base AirPods 4: USB-C only, no wireless coil, no Find My speaker. AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 3: wireless charging plus a Find My speaker. Pro 3 adds MagSafe, a lanyard loop, IP57 on buds and case, and the larger 62.2 x 47.2 x 21.8 mm shell. If losing a case in a bag is your recurring problem, the Find My speaker is the line that matters more than any audio spec.
Winner by Job
Commutes, flights and noisy rooms: AirPods Pro 3. You want the seal and the stronger ANC, and the extra hours with ANC on matter when you cannot pause to recharge. AirPods 4 with ANC will still let the cabin in.
Gym and runs: AirPods Pro 3. Foam-infused tips plus workout heart rate, with Hearing Protection there if you train somewhere loud. Fix the tip size before you add hooks or straps; the seal is also what lets the heart-rate sensor read steadily.
All-day open-ear, and you will not wear tips: AirPods 4. This is the honest open-ear buy. You give up ANC, Transparency, wireless charging and the Find My speaker on the case. That is the trade. If that trade is fine, stop reading and buy them.
Tempted by AirPods 4 with ANC as the middle option: still Pro 3 for most people. The ANC 4 exists for a narrow brief: an open-ear fit, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, and a wireless case with a Find My speaker, without Pro tips. If that is exactly your list, it is a legitimate product. It is not the recommendation for most people, because you get Pro-adjacent noise features without the seal, without the eight-hour ANC runtime and without the health suite.

Camera AirPods and the September Wait
A demo video that leaked inside a macOS 26.7 release candidate showed camera-equipped AirPods using Visual Intelligence. That is a leak, not a ship date. Mark Gurman at Bloomberg still has camera AirPods (B790 and B798) on a 2027 track.
The B790 unit in the clip was reportedly a modified AirPods Pro 3 design that was removed from Apple's 2026 roadmap, with a newer B798 generation still in development. Do not wait. Waiting only makes sense if Visual Intelligence on the buds is essential to you, and you are willing to go without today's noise cancellation, battery and health features for more than a year. For everyone else, buy the pair that matches how you listen now.
If You Already Own a Pair
AirPods Pro 2. Keep them if the current seal and ANC still work for you. Move to Pro 3 if you want the foam-infused tips, the stronger ANC, workout heart rate or the hearing features. Do not plan on reusing Pro 2 tips or case covers, because the nozzle and the case both changed.
Older open-ear AirPods, including AirPods 3. If you still refuse tips, AirPods 4 is the current open-ear set and the straightforward replacement. If the reason you barely wore the old ones was noise, skip the open-ear line entirely and go to Pro 3.
AirPods 4 with ANC already in the case. Stay put unless you now want the seal, the extra ANC hours or the health suite. Those three are the Pro 3 upgrade, not a settings toggle you have been missing.
What to Skip
- AirPods 4 with ANC as the safer middle. Open-ear plus Adaptive Audio plus a wireless Find My case is a real niche. It is not the pick for most buyers who want noise control, and those buyers want Pro 3.
- Waiting for camera AirPods. A 2027 product on current reporting. A leaked demo video does not make it a September 2026 purchase.
- Case covers and ear tips cut for the wrong generation. Pro 3, Pro 2 and AirPods 4 cases are three different sizes, Pro 1 and Pro 2 tips do not fit the Pro 3 nozzle, and AirPods 4 have no tips to replace at all.
- Treating AirPods Max 2 as a fourth option in this decision. Over-ear is a different shape, a different price and a different review.
Bottom Line
AirPods Pro 3 is the 2026 buy for almost everyone who will wear tips: a real seal, the stronger ANC, up to eight hours with ANC on, workout heart rate and the hearing features. AirPods 4 is the buy if you will not wear tips and will not miss noise cancellation.
AirPods 4 with ANC is the awkward middle, fair if you insist on open-ear plus Adaptive Audio and a wireless case, and not the recommendation otherwise. Camera AirPods are a 2027 wait. Buy for the ears you have today.
