Both AirPods 5 versions have Active Noise Cancellation. Choose the standard model if USB-C charging suits you; consider AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case if you want volume swipes on the earbuds, longer listening between charges and more ways to recharge. Apple’s announcement makes clear that the differences extend beyond the case.

The battery figures are Apple’s ratings, so leave margin when planning a long journey. Also, buying a charging case later is not evidence that the standard earbuds gain volume-swipe hardware or the other model’s battery capacity. Choose the complete version whose listed features you need.
Who should choose the standard model?
It is the sensible starting point if you already charge small devices over USB-C and your listening sessions fit comfortably inside its rated battery life. Do not pay more just to get ANC: the standard model already includes it.
Keep fit at the center of your decision. Apple describes these as open-ear earbuds. If that shape has been uncomfortable or insecure for you before, improved specifications do not settle the fit question. Check the seller’s return conditions before committing.
When the Wireless Charging Case version earns its place
Volume control on the stem is useful when your phone is in a bag. The additional rated listening time matters more for uninterrupted sessions than the relatively small increase in total case capacity. These are practical reasons to consider the step up even if you never use wireless charging.
If you already have a compatible bedside charger, check how the case will sit on it. Apple lists Apple Watch and Qi charging, plus a Find My case sound for this version. Those conveniences may be more valuable than another accessory purchase.
ANC, Siri AI and translation have different limits
Apple claims stronger noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is a manufacturer comparison, not evidence from our own testing or a guarantee for your ears. Siri AI is rolling out in beta, and Live Translation requires compatible devices, current software and firmware, and Apple Intelligence enabled; region and language limits apply. These qualifications appear in the launch announcement.
Older Apple software and non-Apple devices can use AirPods as Bluetooth headphones, with limited functionality, according to Apple’s system requirements. Do not buy them for a particular intelligent feature until you have checked your phone’s eligibility.
