The 2026 Lineup at a Glance
The split between the two machines is the same one Apple has run for several generations, and it is a deliberate product decision rather than a technical limit.

Thunderbolt 4 vs Thunderbolt 5: What Actually Changes
Both use the same USB-C shaped connector, and both carry data, video and power down one cable. The difference is headroom.
Thunderbolt 4 runs at 40Gb/s. That has been the standard across Apple laptops for years, and it is genuinely a lot of bandwidth — enough for a fast external SSD, a couple of displays, and a dock's worth of peripherals.
Thunderbolt 5 raises that to 80Gb/s in both directions simultaneously. It can also reallocate that bandwidth asymmetrically, pushing up to 120Gb/s in one direction when a display needs it. That mode is the reason you see the 120Gb/s figure quoted, and it exists specifically for very high-resolution, high-refresh-rate monitors.
Who actually needs 80 or 120Gb/s?
Be honest with yourself here, because the answer is "fewer people than the marketing implies". Thunderbolt 5 earns its keep if you are:
- Driving multiple high-refresh or very high-resolution displays from one cable.
- Working off external NVMe arrays where the drive itself can saturate more than 40Gb/s — most single portable SSDs cannot.
- Using external GPU-class or PCIe expansion hardware where the bus is the bottleneck.
- Running a single-cable desk setup that carries displays, storage and networking simultaneously.
If your daily reality is one monitor, a keyboard, and a backup drive, Thunderbolt 4 will not slow you down. The Air's two ports are more likely to constrain you than their speed is.
Backward compatibility
Thunderbolt 5 ports accept everything older: Thunderbolt 4 and 3 devices, USB4, and ordinary USB-C peripherals. They negotiate down automatically. A Thunderbolt 4 dock works fine on a Thunderbolt 5 Mac — it simply runs at Thunderbolt 4 speeds. You do not need to replace accessories to use a new machine.
The reverse also holds: a Thunderbolt 5 accessory will physically connect to a Thunderbolt 4 Mac and work at the lower speed. Cables matter here, though. Passive USB-C charging cables often do not carry full data bandwidth, so use a cable rated for the Thunderbolt generation you are trying to hit.
MagSafe 3: Why Apple Brought It Back
MagSafe 3 is a dedicated magnetic charging port, and its real value is not the magnet — it is that charging does not consume a Thunderbolt port. On an Air with only two, that is the difference between a usable machine and a permanent game of musical cables.
The magnetic breakaway is the safety feature everyone remembers: catch the cable with your foot and it detaches rather than pulling the laptop off the desk. On the MacBook Pro, MagSafe is also the route to the fastest charging speeds — the highest-wattage fast charging is delivered over MagSafe rather than Thunderbolt.

HDMI: Pro Only
The MacBook Pro's built-in HDMI port exists for one reason — walking up to a display you do not control and plugging in without hunting for an adapter. Conference room projectors, hotel TVs, client monitors, and studio reference displays are overwhelmingly HDMI.
The Pro's HDMI supports high-resolution output including 8K, so it is not a token low-spec port. That said, for a permanent desk setup, driving your monitor over Thunderbolt is usually the better choice, because the same cable carries USB peripherals and power back to the Mac.
Air owners are not locked out — a USB-C to HDMI adapter or any hub covers it. You just have to carry one.
SDXC Card Slot: Pro Only
The full-size SDXC slot is aimed squarely at photographers and video shooters who would otherwise carry a dongle for every offload. It reads UHS-II cards at full speed, which is a meaningful time saving when you are pulling large card contents.
It is worth being clear about who this is for. If you shoot on a camera that uses CFexpress, or your phone is your camera, this slot will sit unused for the life of the machine. It is not a reason to buy a Pro on its own.
How Many Displays Can Each One Drive?
This trips people up more than raw port speed, because the limit is set by the chip, not the connector. The MacBook Air M5 supports two external displays. The MacBook Pro supports more, and the exact ceiling depends on whether you have the M5 Pro or the M5 Max — the higher-tier chip drives more simultaneous displays.
The practical trap is assuming that a hub with three HDMI outputs means three monitors. It does not. A hub cannot exceed what the chip supports, and cheap multi-display adapters often achieve extra screens through DisplayLink software compression rather than native output, which costs CPU and looks worse in motion. If you need a specific number of displays, check the chip's specification before buying the dock, not after.
One more detail worth knowing: on some configurations the external display count assumes the laptop lid is closed. If you want to run your built-in screen plus the maximum number of externals, verify that combination specifically.
The Headphone Jack Is Better Than You Think
Both machines keep a 3.5mm jack, and on recent Macs it supports high-impedance headphones — the kind that sound thin and quiet plugged into a phone. If you own studio headphones, this is a genuinely useful port rather than a legacy leftover.
What You Actually Need to Buy
For a MacBook Pro, usually nothing. Three Thunderbolt 5 ports plus HDMI plus a card slot covers most desks without a dock. Add one only if you need many legacy USB-A devices or wired Ethernet.
For a MacBook Air, budget for a hub or dock from the start. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports is workable while portable, but one of them frequently ends up on power, leaving a single port for everything else. A compact hub with HDMI, a couple of USB-A ports and pass-through charging solves it. Prioritise pass-through charging — a hub that occupies your only free port without feeding power back is a bad trade.

Thunderbolt 5 on the Pro is real headroom, but it is headroom for multi-display and high-speed storage work, not something you will feel in everyday use. The honest port difference between these two machines is HDMI and the SD slot, plus a third port — that is what you are paying for, more than raw bandwidth. Buy the Air and a good hub if you are portable; buy the Pro if your desk is genuinely full.
