iOS 27 public beta arrives ~July 14. Step-by-step install guide, supported iPhones, which models get Siri AI, battery caveats, and how to downgrade to iOS 26.
The iOS 27 public beta is expected around July 14, 2026 — about a week after Apple shipped the third developer beta. If you have a spare iPhone 11 or newer, it is the earliest safe-ish way to try Siri AI and the new Apple Intelligence features two months before everyone else. If you only have one iPhone and it runs your banking, CarPlay, and two-factor codes, wait for the second public beta. This guide covers exactly how to install it, what you get, and how to back out.
Source check: July 10, 2026. Apple has confirmed a July public beta via the Apple Beta Software Program, developer beta 3 shipped on July 6, and the finished release is scheduled for September alongside the new iPhones.
When Does the iOS 27 Public Beta Come Out?
Apple's pattern for the last several years has been to ship the first public beta roughly one week after the third developer beta. Developer beta 3 arrived July 6, which points to a public beta in the week of July 13, with July 14 the most likely day. The public beta is free — you no longer need a $99 developer account, just an Apple ID enrolled at beta.apple.com.
The finished version of iOS 27 ships in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 lineup. Everything you test this summer will keep updating roughly every two to three weeks until then.
Which iPhones Can Install iOS 27?
iOS 27 supports the iPhone 11 and later, including the iPhone SE from the second generation onward. But there is a second cutoff that matters more than the install list: Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI only run on the iPhone 15 Pro and later.
- iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14 and SE: can install iOS 27 and get the redesign, Safari tab organization, parental controls, and performance work — but no Siri AI.
- iPhone 15 Pro and later: full Apple Intelligence, including the new Siri AI assistant with personal context.
- iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air: additionally get custom Siri voices and the improved on-device dictation.

Before You Install: The 10-Minute Prep That Saves Your Data
The single most important step is an archived backup. A normal iCloud backup gets overwritten as soon as your phone starts backing up on iOS 27 — and an iOS 27 backup cannot be restored to iOS 26. If you ever want to downgrade, the archived backup is the only clean way back.
Plug your iPhone into a Mac, open Finder, select the phone, choose "Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac", then Manage Backups → right-click the fresh backup → Archive. On Windows, the same flow lives in the Apple Devices app.
How to Install the iOS 27 Public Beta
Once the public beta is live (again, expect roughly July 14), installation takes about 15 minutes end to end. The step-by-step list below is the whole process.
What's Actually New in iOS 27
The headline is Siri AI — a genuinely conversational assistant that can use personal context from Messages and Mail, see what is on your screen, and answer general-knowledge questions like a chatbot. It gets its own Siri app for browsing past conversations. Beyond that, the most noticeable changes in daily use:
- Photos: AI object removal, image extension, and perspective reframing built into the editor.
- Safari: automatic tab organization and AI-generated custom extensions.
- Visual Intelligence: point the camera at a receipt or menu and it extracts totals, nutrition info, and calendar events.
- Shortcuts: describe an automation in plain English and iOS builds it.
- Home: 4K HomeKit video recording with AI activity summaries.
- Parental controls: a redesigned Screen Time with real-time monitoring.
We track the complete feature list, including the smaller quality-of-life items, in our iOS 27 feature roundup.
Should You Install It?
Install it now if you have a secondary iPhone, or you are comfortable living with occasional app crashes and a battery that drains 15–25% faster while background indexing settles in the first days.
Wait for public beta 2 or 3 (usually August) if this is your only phone. By then the worst first-wave bugs are gone and the battery behavior normalizes.
Do not install it on a phone you depend on for work, banking apps that block beta OS versions, or medical device pairing. September is not far away.
One more practical note: after installing, Apple Intelligence features may need to re-download their on-device models — leave the phone on the charger with Wi-Fi for an hour before judging performance or battery life. While you wait, our battery lifespan guide covers the settings worth checking after any major update.
How to Go Back to iOS 26
Downgrading is possible but not gentle: you put the phone into recovery mode, restore iOS 26 with a full erase, then restore your archived backup from before the beta. Anything created after you joined the beta is lost unless it lives in iCloud sync (photos, notes, messages survive; app data does not). This is exactly why the archived backup in the prep step is non-negotiable.
Bottom Line
The iOS 27 public beta is the most interesting summer beta in years because of Siri AI — and the first one where the hardware cutoff (iPhone 15 Pro or newer for the AI features) changes whether it is worth installing at all. Archive a backup, install it on the right phone, and you are two months ahead of everyone else.
