John Ternus became Apple CEO on September 1, 2026, and Tim Cook became executive chairman. Apple announced the transition in April; it was not first confirmed in late August.

What Apple announced
Apple’s April 20 announcement set September 1 as the effective date. It identified Ternus as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, not worldwide marketing. Apple’s current leadership page now lists Ternus as CEO and Cook as executive chair.
The announcement also named Arthur Levinson lead independent director and said Ternus would join the board. Cook’s described responsibilities include engagement with policymakers; our earlier claim about a specifically assigned product and AI strategy role went beyond that statement.
Ternus’s background
Apple says Ternus joined product design in 2001, became a hardware-engineering vice president in 2013 and joined the executive team in 2021. He worked across several product categories. That chronology is more precise than saying he ran every hardware product for more than a decade.
What it means for an iPhone purchase
A leadership announcement does not confirm a product launch, price, case fit or software release date. Assess a purchase using the specifications, availability and terms of the product actually offered. The executive’s background can provide context, but it is not evidence that a particular upgrade will be better.
Apple’s event page confirms a September 9 event. It does not turn the rumored iPhone lineup into announced hardware.
