Understand Apple Intelligence processing, Private Cloud Compute, ChatGPT extension data rules and the privacy controls you can check on your own device.
Apple Intelligence uses more than one processing path. Some work happens on the device, other requests can use Private Cloud Compute, and a separately enabled ChatGPT extension sends selected information to a third party. The privacy rules are specific to each path.

Private Cloud Compute is a defined system
Apple’s Private Cloud Compute documentation describes its security design, including stateless processing, software transparency and limits on privileged access. Those are documented design commitments, not proof that every Apple service uses PCC or that any system is infallible.
Do not infer the processing location of every task from a simple feature-name table. An image, writing or Siri feature can have its own requirements and behavior. Use current documentation and available reports for the installed software.
Review the Apple Intelligence Report
Apple’s privacy guide explains the report under Privacy & Security. Choose a reporting interval and export the recorded request information. This helps inspect supported Apple Intelligence activity; an empty report is not a complete audit of all network traffic from your phone.
ChatGPT is a separate, optional extension
Apple’s ChatGPT Extension privacy notice says it is disabled by default. When used, requests and selected attachments can be sent with limited associated information. The IP address is obscured, while approximate location can still be provided. Review the request and confirmation settings before sending sensitive material.
Without a connected account, the notice says OpenAI must not retain requests or responses unless applicable law requires it, and must not use them for model training. With a connected ChatGPT account, that account’s settings and OpenAI policies apply. The earlier blanket claim of a 30-day retention period was incorrect.
Controls have separate scopes
You can disable the ChatGPT extension without assuming that all Siri or Apple services are disabled. Likewise, changing an analytics preference should not be described as a universal switch for every cloud request. Review the settings for the service you are actually using.
For Siri configuration, see Siri settings. For current and announced assistant capabilities, see the Siri release timeline. A promised personal-context feature is not evidence that every installed version already scans or acts on that information.
Identify the receiving service, the material you selected, whether an account is connected, and the applicable retention rules. A managed work device can also have organizational policies; do not assume this consumer guide establishes everything an employer can or cannot access.
This article does not rank competing assistants by privacy without comparable evidence, or promise that turning off Apple Intelligence eliminates every AI feature in every app. Check third-party applications and other Apple services independently.
